News Summer 2002 Newsletter Dear IJ's and TigerPaw Traveller! 25 Jul 02 Johannesburg / Maun - Delta This polo safari is one the finest programs IJ's Exotic Polo Holidays is able to offer. The Game viewing from Horseback is a unique experience for the able rider, and the setting of the Oavango Delta, one of the world's greatest biospheres. The bush polo at Karin's Camp (also for the rated player) is again an IJ's classic, describing perfectly the unique adventure travel product IJ's is known for. Arrival at JNB airport, client will be met by an Albatros representative who will hand over vouchers and assist client to take his onward flight to Maun . You are met at Maun Airport by our representative & transferred by light aircraft (12kg luggage p/p in soft bag) to the nearest airstrip to Kujwana, a 25 minute flight. You are then transferred into the camp by vehicle which takes approximately 1 hour. (Game viewing). An introduction talk & demo on tack & general advice on game viewing from horseback is followed by an orientation ride for approximately 1 - 2 hours. KUJWANA CAMP 26 Jul 02 Delta Kujwana Camp. Morning game ride in the Xudum area. Wake up is 1 hour
before dawn to ensure best game viewing. Wade through lush green malapos
that lead you from island to -island. Surprise a timid bushbuck out his
dense cover on a heavily wooded island, or enjoy the herds of Lechwe &
Zebra moving through the open spaces. Return to camp for lunch. Siesta.
Afternoon game drive with sunset drinks & evening night drive with a
spot light. 27 Jul 02 Delta Kujwana Camp. Ride east towards Beacon and lion island. These are two
very large islands in the area which are cut off from Kujwana by the
Xwaapa river. The area is criss-crossed with game paths leading you
through a chain of rain pans. This is a great contrast to the open
flood plains. Mapane forests and Acacia woodlands offer a good variety
of food for Kudu and Giraffe. Breeding herds of elephant enjoy the
security of the dense forest and should the pans be holding water
zebra, wilderbeest and buffalo will also be found. Animal tracks abound
telling you of what has been and gone - or what you might still find.
Afternoon bird walk. 28 Jul 02 Delta Moklowane Camp. Move from Kujwana to Moklowane camp. This is approximately 30km ride heading North West. The route moves through open floodplains and scattered islands towards the Matsebe river system. A picnic lunch is served on a shady island 2 hours ride from Moklowane camp. Arrive sunset. MOKLOWANE CAMP 29 Jul 02 Delta Moklowane Camp. Morning game ride with a picnic breakfast carried in
saddle bags. This camp is on the Matsebe river system and features wide
open flood plains interspersed with Moklowane palms - favourite food of
Elephant & Baboon. Good area for plains game. Afternoon: 1 - 2 hours
mokoro experience (traditional dug out canoe). 30 Jul 02 Maun/Johannesburg - Waterberg For your final ride we will maybe take a final exhilarating gallop and run with the game before returning to camp to prepare for your onward journey. Air transfer ((12kg luggage p/p in soft bag) to Maun airport for flight to Johannesburg (FLIGHT IS NOT INCLUDED IN PRICE) Client will be met by an Albatros representative for transfer to lodge KARIN'S CAMP: This unique IJ's product is aimed to satisfy a market interested in game conservancy, relaxation, horse riding and polo. Under the supervision of a qualified HPA polo coach, and a full size polo ground with playing polo ponies, Karin's Camp Polo Safari is positioned as an exclusive holiday destination. We offer is stick and ball, tuition, gameviewing on horseback and relaxation. Depending on the dates and time of year, we also have good connections with some of the Natal Polo Clubs, such as Karkloof, Mooi River, Lions River, clients could with prior notice play in teams entered by KC. The polo in SA is probably most similar to that played New Zealand. Club orientated with most played over a 3 day weekend, many in small towns. Some of these venues are close to big 5 game reserves, the Drakensberg Mountains or the sea. At present we can only cater for 4 playing guests and due to the nature of the game on the reserve this should be limited to intermediate and experienced riders only. Karin's husband, Alessandro, and son Adriano , all play and love the sport, and your clients will find themselves in a truly polo mad environment albeit in the Bush. As for the game on the farm, we currently have two White Rhino, a large heard of Giraffe (including two of the biggest and most stunning males in the area), all the plains antelope(Impala, Kudu, Eland, Oryx,Waterbuck,Redhartebeest), Blue and Black Wildebeest, Warthogs, Wild pigs, Zebra, we have a Leopard also, but as yet he is proving very elusive! The farm is situated 21/2 hrs by car or 45 mins by small plane North of JHBG, at the highest point of the Waterberg Mountain Range. In winter the temp. is on average 15-20degrees with chilly mornings and evenings. Summer temp. rarely exceeds 8degrees and the afternoon rains can produce some of the most amazing electrical storms I have ever seen (the most expensive firework displays have nothing on this!) Facilities at the lodge include sauna, jacuzzi, pool. Our first class dining room serves a mix of Mediterranean and African food with a good selection of national wines(which are included in the cost, however, bar drinks and drinks served to rooms are not included). We try to create a friendly and very relaxed atmosphere with the onus being that the client can do as much or as little as he or she likes on any given day.(we try to discourage the wearing of watches as much as possible, as once you arrive, African time can slip away from your grasp very easily!!) We are no more than 45mins from Big 5 game lodges(Loin, Elephant, Buffalo, Leopard etc)and a trip is easily arranged. Overnight : Karin's Camp : 01 x SWB (Include : accommodation, meals, game drives, game walks, informal Polo) 31 Jul - 04 Aug 02 Waterberg As dawn lightens the horizon, a knock on our door awakens us to a new bushveld day. our personal ranger escorts us to the open Land Rover and heads off into the reserve. Afterwards we will enjoy a sumptuous South African breakfast and have time to relax before lunch. For the more energetic there is the option of an environmental awareness walking trail. On the afternoon game drive as evening approaches we enjoy watching the sun sink below the horizon. Polo : includes 4 ponies to stick and ball morning and afternoon Overnight : Karin's Camp : 01 x SWB (Include : accommodation, meals, game drives, game walks, informal Polo) 04 Aug 02 Depart Bringing the rough with the smooth, and you, together!
