A desert
kingdom featuring forts, palaces, a luxury raj tented camp, one of the
world’s five best, turbaned & mustachioed desert warriors, fast but
smooth and maneuverable Marwari Horses.
The Pushkar Fair is
one of the biggest cattle
fairs of Rajasthan held annually near Ajmer. Beginning as a religious fair
in homage to Bhrama (the creator) one of the few sites left in India,
which so acknowledges the creator under this name, the ancient lake of
Pushkar has been visited on the night of the Pushkar full moon since time
immemorial.
Over the centuries, in
order to pay for the journey, villagers began to bring popular breeds of
cows, camels, sheep, goats and Marwari horses for barter for paying for
their journey here and back and today the fair attract people not only
from Rajasthan but also Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. People of all castes
and creed participate freely in the
fair.
Wandering desert
tribes, singers and craftsmen will be seen in the most colourful of
dresses like many desert communities are given
to.

Also featured are
bullock, camel and horse races and
thoroughbred animals compete against each. Apart from shops selling normal
utility items and agricultural implements, there is a separate market for
fodder – a high value item for desert communities, at the
fair.

Our visitors have
begun booking for this famous fair and true to the variety that is
available in India, and the range that we offer, some are riding horseback
with us on the famous Marwari and some driving through the desert overland
by car after stopping at some of India’s best known tiger and birding
reserves.
(AN OPTION EVEN
WITHOUT THE HORSES!)
The dates of the fair
are 8-15th Nov 2005, the last night being the night of the full
moon or Karthik Purnima, the culmination date and the 15th
being the day of the Holy immersion in the lake of Pushkar. We however
will see enough of the vibrant fair even when we enter Pushkar prior to
the 15th if not staying on till the last
day.

NEWS FLASH – OUR TRACKERS REVEAL BIG
GAME SIGHTINGS IMMINENT IN BOTSWANA’S OKAVANGO
DELTA
SHORT NOTICE
DISCOUNTED RIDES START JUNE 03rd,, 21st , &
29th , 2005
COSTS: GBP
300.00 per person per night

With the recent bush fires the game sighting
has increased dramatically as the rain pans have dried up and the
flood is only 10 km away.
With the burnt section under
water (about 20 sq kms) it will attract even more game into the
area.

This vast
inland delta, one of Southern Africa's most enigmatic river systems,
lies like an emerald jewel on the edge of the great Kalahari desert,
an astonishing maze of papyrus lined waterways, meadows and woodland
rich in birdlife and game.
On horseback
you can venture further into the delta and get closer to the wildlife than
you can on foot.
Imagine
yourself mounted high above the long grass and reeds watching great herds
of zebra, wildebeest and lechwe as they move across golden floodplains and
the breathtaking excitement when your silent progress along game trails
used only by the animals brings you upon a herd of buffalo or a family
group of elephant.

Cantering alongside the elegant
motion of a giraffe is an experience you will never forget and the only
sounds you will hear, as the wind soughs though the long grass and rattles
the palms, are the fisheagle's haunting cry, the splash of a disappearing
crocodile and the faraway drumming of hooves.
As the blood red sun drops into the
black of night, the hyena'' whoop-de-whoop and the lion's roar accompany
your fireside reverie and a hippo's watery grunt punctuates your dreams.
This is as close to nature as you will ever get.
Okavango Horse
Safaris are highly personalised safaris run by Barney and PJ Bestelink in
the remote central region of Botswana’s Okavango
Delta.
On the 10 day ride three different
camps are used depending on water levels and game movements. Major camp
changes are supported by vehicle or mokoro (dugout canoe) to transport
luggage and equipment. A rifle is carried on all
rides.

The horses are a mix of
Thoroughbreds, Arabs, Anglo Arab and Saddlebred. They are cared for by
Barney and her team of grooms. Spare horses are taken on every trip. Tack
is English style and each saddle has a seat saver for comfort. Maximum
weight is 200 lbs for a novice rider and 210 lbs for an advanced rider (15
stone or 95 kg).
Minimum riding ability required is
mastery of the basic aids. Riders must be able to post to the trot for
stretches of 10 minutes, be comfortable at all paces, and be able to
gallop out of trouble. It is a great advantage if you are fit and a
proficient rider.
The choice of dates are:
Arr June 3rd Dep
16th. (10 nights)
Arr June 21st Dep
26th. (5 nights)
Arr Jume 29th Dep
July 09th (10 nights)

LENGTH
OF THE RIDE: Between 4-6 hours in the saddle a
day. This is broken by refreshment stops - picnic breakfast or lunch and a
10-minute walk for every two hours spent in the saddle. (This eases up the
rider using different muscles, and helps the horse from constant pressure
of the rider's weight).
TERRAIN:
The Okavango Delta has been described as a water meadow. Palm islands,
grassy flood plains, mopane forests and clear streams. Highest water is
normally between May to September. Many of the flood plains are full at
this time and the horses wade through from island to island. The going is
normally quite good and firm along the edges of the islands.
GAME
VIEWING: Game is plentiful, including elephant,
buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, kudu, lechwe, reedbuck, bushbuck,
steenbok, impala, roan antelope, duiker, waterbuck, tsesebe, bat-eared
fox, sidestriped and blackbacked jackal, African wildcat, baboon, vervet
monkey, honey badger, spotted hyena, mongoose, meerkat, warthog, tortoise
and ostrich; special nocturnal creatures - porcupine, aardwolf, aardvark,
civet, genet, serval, spring hare; water species - hippo, crocodile, cape
clawless and spotted necked otter; predators - leopard, lion, cheetah,
wild dog. Safety precautions are taken when viewing any dangerous
game.
OTHER
ACTIVITIES: Although our priority is riding, we
offer alternative activities during the afternoons that are not day rides.
A 6 hour morning can be tiring so afternoons are spent at leisure with
evening bird walks or mokoro rides (water levels permitting). Afternoon
game drives and night spotting are also offered.
WHERE
THE HORSE SAFARIS OPERATE: Okavango Horse Safaris
operate in a private concession 2,500 sq. km situated on the western side
of the Okavango Delta bordering on Moremi Game reserve. The area includes
three major river systems of the Okavango Delta, the Xudum, the Matsibie
and the Kiri.
HOW
TO GET THERE: Air Botswana fly from either
Johannesburg, Gaborone or Victoria Falls and Air Namibia from Windhoek
into Maun. We can book all Air Botswana flights. We arrange transfer by
light aircraft from Maun to the nearest airstrip (seat rate on our price
list). Clients are collected from the airstrip and transferred by 4x4
vehicle to camp. Please remember that internal transfer light aircraft
have a luggage weight restriction of 12 .- 15kg.
FOR PAYMENTS SEE
DETAILS ALONGSIDE.
COSTS: GBP 300.00
per person per night

APPLICABLE.
