Personal Profile:
Born in Shillong, Meghalaya on 18 January 1959, Inder-Jit Singh's fascination with the Himalayas and remote parts of the Indian Sub Continent began as a schoolboy and "military brat" in the early 70's, when he returned to his birthplace. This fascination is also attributable to his father's association with the Assam Rifles (an old frontier force of the Northeast Frontier Agency), and the latter's role in the flight of the Dalai Lama from Tibet into Northeastern India.

Inder-Jit's school years included travels in the mid-70's to remote corners of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur and Assam, including journeys along the Stillwell Road and Pangsu's Pass, Kohima, Mokokchong, Bible Hill and Wokha in Nagaland as well as the border villages in Burma.

It was these early years of travel that led to his fascination with the indigenous culture and biodiversity of the regions that today feature prominently in TigerPaw Adventures, especially his anthropological and WW2 history trips and expeditions he has promoted and conducted since 1979.

Coming from a long and distinguished military lineage has also contributed to the career he has charted out for himself in later years. Included in this military heritage are a grand uncle who was a distinguished Ex-fighter pilot from the RAF, as well as an uncle who retired as a Rear Admiral and who served on the Atlantic convoys during the War as a distinguished Indian Navy officer serving with the Royal Navy. In all, four of Inder-Jit's uncles have been gold medalists from the British Training Ship, Dufferin.

His father retired as a Major General from the Indian Army and served with the Assam Rifles. It is interesting to note that policies of the famous anthropologist Verrier Ellwyn and Prime Minister Nehru, regarding outside interaction with remote tribal communities of Northeast India, were often implemented by the Assam Rifles. These policies, and the people they affected, were to later feature in Inder-Jit's professional anthropological expeditions, sustainability planning programs, as well as his company's nomination by various Indian Military regiments and private bodies for conducting Himalayan expeditions, and training tribal eco-tour and river guides.

Inder-Jit and his wife Jasleen now share their time between British Columbia, Canada and India as well as conducting horseback adventure trips and polo holidays worldwide.

Professional Background and Experience:
Upon completing his Bachelors in Economics in the summer of 1979, Inder-Jit Singh first trained as a wildlife naturalist in Nepal's Chitwan Park. He then moved to Kashmir and Ladakh, working as a trek leader, Fishing Camp Manager, and then the Yurt Camp architect in Ladakh in 1980, building the final stage of the Ladakh Serai for the TigerMountain Group. In 1980, Inder-Jit Singh co-led a trekking expedition, along with Jeffrey Campbell, to the source of the Ganges with Charles Allen, for the writing of Allen's book - A Mountain in Tibet.

In 1982 Inder-Jit set up his own adventure travel company - TigerPaw Adventures - conducting high altitude treks in Kashmir and Ladakh in the summers and overland expeditions in Rajasthan, Gujrat, Madhya Pradesh, Southern India and Garhwal in the winter months.

Besides running all kinds of educational adventure trips, Inder-Jit has been instrumental in developing and conducting off-beat trips for American Express, in particular, outdoor management style team-building and leadership programs for the American Express Human Resources Division. He has also conducted mountaineering, trekking, skiing and rafting expeditions in the Himalayas for the British Army. As well, Inder-Jit has led Himalayan rafting expeditions and training programs for forward formations of the Indian Army, and led the first all-woman rafting team from the Indian Police. Inder-Jit played a key role in founding the Indian Association of Professional Rafting Outfitters.

Inder-Jit's strong interest in Himalayan eco-tourism led to his participation in 1993 in the first Himalayan Tourism Advisory Board panel discussions with government officials and private agencies, to help determine tourism policy in Arunachal Pradesh.

In 1993, Inder-Jit also became one of the first five Indians to be nominated for a Fellowship on Environmental Education by the US ASIA Environmental Partnership Program through the Asia Foundation in San Francisco.

He was subsequently the point person for drawing up and initiating a proposal for his company for sustainability planning in the Eastern Himalayas and in 1994, was awarded one of the five annual prestigious Australasia-wide grants from the Bio Diversity Conservation Network (a consortium of the World Wide Fund For Nature, The Nature Conservancy and The World Resources Institute-Washington DC). It is noteworthy that this grant was awarded to only two other Indian agencies, The Tata Energy Research Institute and The Wild Life Institute of India, both premier scientific bodies in India.

More recently, Inder-Jit has developed and conducted on-going anthropology expeditions designed for Turtle Tours Arizona, USA, which runs extremely select study tours in India's remote tribal belts in Orissa and the Rann of Kutch. As well, his company conducted Expedition Himalayan Hunter for the Royal Air Force in September 1999.

Inder-Jit has also developed International Horseback Adventures and PoloHolidays, and conducts these in various locations worldwide. The horseback and polo safaris are selected on the basis of their unique quality. For example, one of the horseback safaris developed studies the customs and ceremonies of the Nihang Warriors of the Punjab foothills in India, and the exploration of the Mustang Valley in Nepal-Tibet. The polo safaris include polo instruction as well as adventures on horseback in various ecosystems in Africa, South America, and other parts of the world.
